Funerals

At the heart of the Christian faith is the belief that God is alongside us in the tragedy of death, and in our hope of new life existing beyond death. However there is no requirement to be a churchgoer or have a Christian faith in order to have a funeral and support from St Mary’s: we are here to serve anyone in need in our parish.

The minister taking the funeral service will help advise you on the service.

We have a number of people who are trained and experienced to providing pastoral and bereavement support, please ask.

The Service

You can arrange to speak to a minister about your service by contacting [email protected]

Music

You will need to discuss your music arrangements with our Director of Music who can be contacted via email [email protected] An organist will always be part of any service at St Mary’s and this will usually be played by our Director of Music.  Other options available to you are a professional choir quartet, you may also wish to have one of the choir perform a solo.  Individual soloist musicians may also be discussed with the Director of Music.  An online or in person meeting is available to you (chargeable) with our Director of Music to discuss your requirements in full detail.

Flowers

We do not have a church flower team for funerals and so the church permits the use of external florists who should be engaged by you.  Please note that during Lent, flowers are not permitted in church and so all arrangements will need to be taken down immediately after the service. Useful notes:

  • We need to know your flower plans as soon as possible please, we need to know from you or the florist when they will be doing the flowers, please note that we have a busy church and so this must be coordinated with the Parish Office
  • Our local florists are familiar with our working parameters
  • We have pedestals and urns that the florists can use; if you have any questions about these you can email [email protected]
  • We need to know whether you will be taking any flowers with you after the service so that we know what will be left in church
  • The church requires that a minimum of one pedestal arrangement (if you are having pedestals) be left in church for the Sunday service, this is how we are able to offer the flexiblity for you to have your own florists

Live Streaming & Recording

We are able to offer live streaming through our own equipment in church, we do need to know in advance and this is chargeable. Recording of the service is also possible however, it is important to note that all of the musicians fees are doubled if you choose to record their performances in line with their performance rights.

Bells

Although not a usual part of a funeral service at St Mary’s, you may wish have bells at your funeral, this may be a simple bell toll alternatively you may wish for our full team of ringers; the cost is the same.
