The project in more detail
The new school has opened this Spring. 700 pupils have been registered and for the time being are being taught under the trees.
Once the school buildings are completed 300 pupils will be selected for the school, with priority given to girls. The state will be asked to take the other pupils.
The community has gifted a large area of land on the outskirts of Malek for the new school. Local community leaders are fully behind the project and are on an advisory group supporting the planning.
7 teachers have been taken on and more will follow, including some women teachers. An experienced headteacher is being sought, and it is envisaged that the quality of teaching will be improved by bringing in some experienced expatriates to do teacher training.
The building plans
Building is happening in stages, as funds become available.
Classrooms and accommodation for teachers are being built now. Teachers' sleeping huts are being built to a traditional design used by the community.
Experienced builders are employed, to ensure the buildings are of a high quality. But the pupils are also involved: they collect stones to be crushed into aggregate for making concrete.
When more funds for materials are raised the next stage is to build a staff room and headteacher's office and stores, and fit out all the buildings. Then the school can be completed with two boreholes for water supply, a library, chapel, sports facilities and clinic.
What will it cost?
Our estimate is that £150,000 more is needed to finish the building.
To run the school it will cost £30,000 per year, to pay teachers and other staff, buy teaching materials etc.
Some key items we need to fund are:

£25,000 |
