Welcome

Welcome to our web pages for the Under Tree Schools project in Southern Sudan.

We are building a future for girls who otherwise would get no education.

We are at a very exciting new stage for the project. After decades of civil war in Sudan, and Joseph and Karin Ayok-Loewenberg’s remarkable schools under the trees, the war is over, and they are now building a permanent school.

It will be mainly for girls, as the new Southern Sudan Government is concentrating its resources for education on boys. Joseph and Karin’s vision is for education that not only helps the girls out of poverty but which will greatly benefit their communities.

We are delighted that we have already raised the cost for the first buildings of the school and classrooms are almost finished. Now we need to put together the funds for the remaining buildings.    Meanwhile the school has been opened and the pupils will be taught under trees until the buildings are ready.

Since October 2006 Joseph has been working as Director for Religious Affairs in the Government of Southern Sudan. Amongst other tasks he is responsible for helping to achieve reconciliation between all the groups in the new country – between Christians and Muslims and between the many tribes. This is recognition by the new Government of his loyalty and determination to work for his people through the war.
